Overview

Northwest China's Gansu province, often abbreviated as Gan or Long, is one of the cradles of Chinese culture. It is situated on the middle and upper reaches of the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, and at the juncture of the Loess Plateau, the Inner Mongolia Plateau and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

The province covers an area of 454,400 square kilometers, extending 1,655 kilometers from east to west. The landforms in Gansu are complicated and varied. It can be divided into seven landform areas, namely Longnan (Liupan mountain) hilly area, Longzhong loess plateau, Gannan plateau, Qilian mountainous area, Hexi corridor high land plain, Beishan mountainous area and Alashan plateau.

Gansu has a dry climate with plenty of sunshine and strong radiation. The temperature varies greatly from day to night. The annual average temperature is between 0 to 14 C.

The province is rich in mineral resources and 145 types of minerals have been discovered in the province. It also boasts 94 types of reserves, including nickel, cobalt, platinum, selenium, gold and iridium, and has large deposits of petroleum, natural gas, chromite and zinc.

In 2018, the province's GDP rose by 6.3 percent year-on-year to 824.61 billion yuan ($117.24 billion). The primary industry expanded 5 percent year-on-year to 92.13 billion yuan, the secondary industry grew by 3.8 percent to 279.47 billion yuan, and the tertiary sector increased by 8.4 percent to 453 billion yuan.

Pillar Industries

Gansu has a relatively reasonable and complete industrial system, with non-ferrous metals, energy, petrochemicals, machinery and electronics, building materials, food and textile as its pillar industries.

1. Non-ferrous Metal Industry

Gansu enjoys abundant resources and large varieties of non-ferrous metals. The reserve of nickel ranks first in the country, while the reserves of aluminum, copper, lead, zinc, antimony, tungsten and platinum-group elements are plentiful. The industry scale expands rapidly as the production volume of non-ferrous metals maintains rapid growth in recent years. The total production volume of the 10 major non-ferrous metals (copper, aluminum, lead, zinc, nickel, tin, stibium, magnesium, titanium and mercury) reached nearly 4 million tons in the province in 2017, an increase of 6.4 percent over the previous year.

Due to the nonferrous metals clustered in Lanzhou, Jinchang and Baiyin, state-level nonferrous metal new material industrial bases were formed.

2. Energy Industry

Gansu has an abundance of renewable energy resources. Hydroelectricity is generated at several locations. A renowned related facility is the installation at the Liujiaxia Gorge along the Yellow River, above Lanzhou. In addition, there is considerable solar power potential in the province, areas of which receive an average of up to 2,900 to 3,300 hours of annual sunshine. Wind power also has great potential and much of the province is buffeted by strong and consistent prevailing winds, which are ideal for generating electricity.

Advantages

Gansu province enjoys a unique geographical location and great infrastructure advantages. It links the eastern and central regions with West China. The New Eurasian Continental Bridge, which connects the Asia-Pacific region and Eurasian countries, goes through the whole province, making Gansu the only province that enjoys such a desirable position in West China.

The province has a solid industry foundation and is considered a major chemical, energy and raw materials base and a core area for industries in China's western areas.

It has also taken the lead in science and technology among provinces in West China. The province has been sharpening competitiveness in innovation and improving the environment for science and technology development, allowing innovation to play a bigger role in upgrading the province's industrial structure.

In recent years, it has built a group of industrial parks and pilot demonstration areas ranging from State-level to provincial level. They serve as platforms for the development of high-tech industries in the province. It is also carrying out a high-end overseas talent recruitment programs to attract more high-quality human resources.

It has 33 colleges and universities, more than 1,500 research institutions and a number of key national laboratories. With such strong research and development advantages, the province leads in a variety of fields, including space technology, biological products, electronic information and desertification control.

In order to seize the historical opportunity of China's implementation of West Development Strategy, Gansu has formulated a series of preferential policies to attract capital, technologies and talented people from both home and abroad for its better social and economic development. These policies cover fields of taxation, finance, credit, land-use and mineral resource exploitation.
