Jiaozhou Economic and Technological Development Zone was set up by the Shandong government in 1992 and elevated to the national level by the State Council in 2012. It's the second national development zone in Qingdao, an important port city along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.

The development zone lies in the central district of Jiaozhou Bay and boasts superb transportation connecting the entire metropolis area of the Shandong Peninsula. The zone is merely 15 kilometers from Qianggang Bay, where cargo sets sail for over 450 ports in over 130 countries and regions. It is only 15 kilometers from the newly built Jiaodong International Airport.

Since 2013, the zone has inked 150 key projects worth 175 billion yuan ($26.09 billion) in total and has forged seven pillar industries, covering smart manufacturing, cold chain, home alliance, biological medicine, supplier logistics, online commerce, and the R&D sector. The three hundred-billion-yuan industrial chains were respectively built upon high-end manufacturing, modern service, and transportation equipment.

The zone is also equipped with a full range of supplementary facilities, including schools, hospitals, hotels, research institutions, business complexes, and tourist resorts.
