Established in 1988, Zhengzhou Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone is the first of its kind in Henan province. It was elevated to the national level by the State Council in 1991.

Today, the development covers an area of 99 square kilometers, with a population of 350,000 and a total of over 40,000 enterprises and individual merchants.

Zhengzhou Hi-Tech is known for its investment in startup incubation. It has built a gigantic innovation space covering 6,500,000 square meters. The incubators, accelerators, and industrial parks are working together, sharing a variety  of entrepreneurship resources.

Zhengzhou Hi-Tech is also a promising place for technological research. Nobel Prize winners Dan Shechtman and Erwin Nether have both opened workstations here. The zone is home to three national innovation teams working on pollution-free brazing, shielding and tunnelling, and polymer materials respectively. The local talent pool features 80,000 talents engaged in science and technology, including 18 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

According to the zone's statistics for 2018, enterprises above designated scale, those with annual sales of more than 5 million yuan ($744,371), generated an added value of 8.86 billion yuan, an increase of 14 percent compared with the previous year. The regional GDP was 35 billion yuan, up 10.3 percent year-on-year.
