Set up in August 1992, Pingdingshan National High-tech Industrial Development Zone was approved to be a provincial level development zone in March 1995 and upgraded into a national one under the approval of the State Council in February 2015.

Located in the east of Pingdingshan, Henan province, the zone occupies an administrative area of 50 square kilometers with a population of 110,000. Sitting between the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway and Jiaozuo-Zhicheng Railway, the zone enjoys convenient transportation networks with five highways passing through, including the Lankao-Nanyang Highway and Nanjing-Luoyang Highway. The zone is 100 kilometers from Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport and 50 km from Lushan Airport, which is part of the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan (2016-20) and is expected to start operation soon.

After more than 20 years of development, the zone has given priority to promoting the clustering development of its leading industries, which are equipment manufacturing, nylon chemicals, and new materials.

Honored as a national high-tech business incubator and the first batch of innovative industrial agglomeration area in Henan, the zone will focus on scientific development, perfect the system and its mechanism, and improve the capacity of independent innovation, in order to accelerate the innovation-driven development of Henan.

In 2018, the zone witnessed a year-on-year growth of 9.1 percent in its regional GDP, and the gross industrial output value above designated size was up 10.6 percent, 3.1 percentage points higher than the average growth rate of the city.
