Weihai Export Processing Zone was founded in April 2000 under the approval of the State Council and started operation in January 2001, the third such zone in China. It is located within Weihai Economic and Technological Development Zone, with a planning area of 2.6 square kilometers.

The zone, situated in the southeastern part of Weihai's downtown area, enjoys convenient transport. It is adjacent to the provincial highways 201 and 204, and Weihai Port is about 4 km from the zone, Weihai Coach Station and Weihai Railway Station 10 km, and Weihai Dashuipo International Airport 30 km.

Since its establishment, the zone has been focusing on the development of electronic information, precision machinery manufacturing, bioengineering and biological medicine, new materials, and food processing industries.

By the end of 2017, the zone had attracted 49 projects with total investment of $900 million, with 36 of those projects funded by foreign companies and enterprises from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

In 2017, the zone's total export-import volume reached 7.37 billion yuan ($1.07 billion), a year-on-year increase of 16.2 percent. Sales revenue totaled 2.97 billion yuan, with a yearly growth rate of 21.2 percent. Fixed-asset investment was 170 million yuan, rising by 173.5 percent year-on-year.
