Founded in 1992, Taiyuan Economic and Technological Development Zone was approved to be a national level zone by the State Council in June 2001. With an overall planning area of 50 square kilometers, the zone was expected to be built in three phrases with the first phase being 9.6 sq km, while the second and third phrases were 20 sq km.

Located in the southwest of Taiyuan, the zone is 500 kilometers from Beijing, 2 km from Taiyuan Wusu International Airport, and 3 km from Taiyuan Railway Station. With multiple national highways passing through, it enjoys convenient transportation to surrounding big cities like Beijing, Tianjin, Zhengzhou, and Xi'an.

In February 2017, the zone was upgraded into Tanghuai Industrial Park, part of the Shanxi Transformation and Comprehensive Reform Demonstration Zone. Boasting 58 industrial enterprises above a designated size, 25 overseas-funded enterprises, and 28 high-tech enterprises, the park has further improved its industrial chain. Five industrial bases have taken shape in the park, covering equipment manufacturing industry, new materials, electronic information, food and agricultural products processing, and biological pharmacy.

In 2017, the park achieved 29.3 billion yuan ($4.33 billion) in its regional GDP, a growth of 14.3 percent year on year. Its added value of industries above a designated scale reached 22.78 billion yuan, up 13.08 percent. Its total retail sales of consumer goods and public budget revenue totaled 2.8 billion and 1.61 billion yuan respectively.
