Established in April 2000, Guangzhou Export Processing Zone (GEPZ) is one of the first 15 export processing zones approved by the State Council. It is located within the east section of the Guangzhou Economic and Technology Development Zone. GEPZ is an enclosed zone allowing Customs to exercise round-the-clock supervision and control of in-and-out export processing goods. The total planned area is 1.3 square kilometers, of which the 94.74 hectares developed in the first phase was approved to be opened in March 2001.

GEPZ has favorable traffic conditions, with the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway to the north and the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Highway to its south. The main road of GEPZ leads to Huangpu New Port, and is convenient for the transportation of bonded goods. In addition, GEPZ can make full use of other infrastructural facilities in Guangzhou Development District.

Export processing enterprises, warehousing enterprises specializing in providing services for the production of export processing enterprises, and transport industries with the approval of Customs are established in the GEPZ. Automobiles and logistics are the two major industries in the zone.

In 2014, Guangzhou Export Processing Zone achieved a total industrial output value of 4.39 billion yuan ($651.59 million), a year-on-year increase of 56.09 percent, and a total import and export volume of $721 million, an increase of 40.6 percent.
