Fuzhou Yuanhong Investment Zone was founded in Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province in 1992 after obtaining the approval of the State Council. The zone is planned to cover 60 square kilometers and 8.5 sq km has currently been developed.

In September 2005, it was officially upgraded into a national-level industrial zone by the State Council. In 2010, it was listed as a standard demonstration zone of the province. In October 2017, it was integrated with Longtian Economic Development Zone as Fuqing Functional Area of Fuzhou New District.

The zone is 29 kilometers from Fuzhou Changle International Airport and 19 km from Fuqing Railway Station and Fuzhou-Xiamen Highway. The provincial highway, Haicheng Road, runs through the zone from east to west.

The zone has an international-level port, which was approved to open to foreign ships by the State Council in 1995. It is a national first-level port with an annual throughput capacity of 3 million tons.

With a focus on high-tech environmental protection, grains and food, textiles and chemical fibers, light industrial machinery, and cold chain logistics, the zone is home to such giant firms as Fujian Xinfuxing Group and Fuzhou YuShi Vehicle Enclosure Co.

By the first half of 2018, the output value of enterprises in the Fuqing Functional Area was 7.4 billion yuan ($1.1 billion), an increase of 28.31 percent year-on-year. Fixed assets investment was 2.9 billion yuan, an increase of 78.11 percent year-on-year.
