Jilin Hunchun Export Processing Zone, located in Hunchun Border Economy Cooperate District, was established upon the approval of the State Council in April 2000. As one of the first 15 pilot export processing zones set up by the State Council and the only one among the 14 open border cities in China, it officially started operation in May 2001, with a planned area of 2.44 square kilometers.

The zone strives to develop labor-intensive and resource-intensive export processing industries, focusing on light industry, clothing, wood products, food, electronics, and new building materials, to fit markets in Japan, South Korea, Russia and North Korea.

At present, 65 enterprises from South Korea, Japan, the United States, Russia and other countries have settled in the zone. During January to May in 2017, it had completed the import and export trade volume of $240 million, an increase of about 15 percent year-on-year, with the import and export cargo volume reaching 190,000 tons, an increase of about 150 percent year-on-year.

Hunchun Export Processing Zone is located on the border of China, Russia and North Korea, and has opened up a number of sea and land transportation routes to Japan, South Korea and North America, which greatly shorten the distance to these countries.
