Located in the geographic center of the booming Pearl River Delta region in south China's Guangdong province, the Nansha New Zone, which evolved from the state-level Nansha Economic and Technological Development Zone that was founded in 1993, became part of the Guangdong Pilot Free Trade Zone in April 2015.

The planned area is about 30.1 square kilometers, including a national ecological demonstration park and three sections: Huangge area, Nansha Island area, and Wanqingsha area 

In the first three quarters of 2018, the regional GDP of the Nansha Economic and Technological Development Zone reached 10.3 billion yuan ($1.53 billion), a year-on-year increase of 5.8 percent. From January to November 2018, the total industrial output value of enterprises above designated size was 22 billion yuan, up 8.5 percent year-on-year. The general public budget income was 661 million yuan, the total tax revenue was 5.17 billion yuan, and the total value of imports and exports was 18.51 billion yuan, up 2.2 percent year-on-year. There were 33,705 new enterprises, an increase of 68 percent year-on-year.

In the top 30 list of the national economic development zones in 2018, Guangzhou Nansha Economic and Technological Development Zone ranked 16th. Since the establishment of Nansha Free Trade Zone in the past three years, Nansha Development Zone has accumulated 127 projects boasting investment from the world's top 500 enterprises.
