Changchun Automotive Economic＆Technological Development Area was established in September 2005 asa provincial-level development zone jointly built by Changchun municipal government and China FAW Group Co Ltd (FAW). Upon the approval of the State Council, it was upgraded into a State-level development area in December 2010. Formerly known as Changchun Automotive Industry Development Zone, it mainly undertook three tasks, namely accelerating the construction of Automobile Townin Changchun, building a new urban areato the west of the city and undertaking FAW's social functions.

Changchun Automotive Economic ＆ Technological Development Area, established in September 2005 upon the approval of the State council, was among the first batch of State-level development zones approved on Dec 30, 2010. Formerly known as Changchun Automotive Industry Development Zone, it is a provincial-level development zone jointly built by Changchun municipal committee and government, as well as China FAW Group Co Ltd (FAW). It mainly undertook three tasks here, including accelerating the construction of automobile city in Changchun, building a new urban area in the west of the city and stripping FAW's social functions. 

Located in the southwest of Changchun with a planned area of 110 square kilometers and a population of 250,000, it has attracted more than 3,160 enterprises withinits completed area of 23 sq km, including 450 industrial enterprises.

Since its establishment, it has been awarded the titles of "national export base for automobile parts", "national industry base for automobile electronics", and "national demonstration base for new industrialization". It is also the first development area which has established a national eco-industrial demonstration zone in Northeast China. 

As the core location for the automobile industry in Changchun, with FAW located, the area has an annual production capacity of produces 1.2 million cars and 200,000 trucks per year. There are 450 industrial enterprises located in the area, of which 45 are above state designated scale.

In 2017, the total output value of the automobile industry in the region exceeded 450 billion yuan ($64.88 billion), ranking among the leadingthe best in national development areas.
