Overview

Shaanxi lies in Northwest China. It covers an area of over 205,000 square kilometers and has about 38 million residents. Xi'an, which includes the sites of the former Chinese capitals of Fenghao and Chang'an, is the provincial capital. Xianyang, which served as the capital of Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC), is located nearby. The other prefecture-level cities that make up the province are Ankang, Baoji, Hanzhong, Shangluo, Tongchuan, Weinan, Yan'an and Yulin.

Shaanxi comprises of the Wei Valley and much of the surrounding fertile Loess Plateau, stretching from the Qinling Mountains and Southern Shaanxi in the south to the Ordos Desert in the north. Along with areas of adjacent Shanxi province and Henan province, the cradle of Chinese civilization is formed, with its Guanzhong region sheltering the capitals of the Zhou, Qin, Han, Jin, Sui, and Tang dynasties.

Due to its large span in latitude, Shaanxi has a variety of climates. The province's annual average temperature is roughly between 8 to 16 degrees Celsius. Its northern area, including the Loess Plateau, has cold and very dry winters, dry springs and autumns, and hot summers. The area, known as Guanzhong is mostly semi-arid, though there are a few areas with a humid subtropical climate, with cool to cold winters, and hot, humid summers that often see early-season heat waves. The southern area is much more humid and lies in the humid subtropical zone, with more temperate winters and long, hot, humid summers.

The fossil fuel and high technology sectors compose of the two largest industries in Shaanxi. The province ranks at the forefront of China in the production of coal, natural gas and crude oil.

Home to several leading universities and research institutes in Northwest China, Shaanxi plays a major role in China's burgeoning aircraft and aerospace industries, producing more than 50 percent of the research and manufacturing equipment for the country's domestic commercial airplane industry.

In 2018, the province's GDP rose by 11.6 percent year-on-year to 2.4 trillion yuan ($347.67 billion). The primary industry contributed 183.02 billion yuan, an increase of 3.2 percent year-on-year. Pillar Industries

After years of development, Shaanxi province has formed a series of competitive and major industries, including high technology, energy, chemicals and tourism. The provincial government is now working towards forming six new pillar industries, namely modern chemicals, automobile, aerospace and aviation, high-end equipment manufacturing, new-generation information technology, new materials and modern medicine. Total industrial output value of these industries is expected to increase from 572.4 billion yuan in 2015 to 1.8 trillion yuan in 2021.

1. New-generation information technology industry

The province is promoting the development of five key sectors -- integrated circuits, intelligent terminals, flat panel displays, solar photovoltaic and big data. It hopes that the scale of integrated circuit industry can rank among the top three in China and the scale of solar photovoltaic glass can rank second in the world.

2. Automobile industry

The province plans to produce 1.1 million cars in 2021, with a total industrial output value of 300 billion yuan, ranking 16th nationwide. It also plans to build China's important industrial bases of self-brand cars and new energy vehicles.

3. New materials

The province plans to maintain its leading position in China in fields related to titanium, magnesium and molybdenum, as well as to accelerate the research and development of new products to innovate a batch of products in aerospace, high-end equipment and electronics industries.
