Kunming High-Tech Industrial Development Zone

Established in 1992, the Kunming High-Tech Industrial Development zone in Kunming, capital of Yunnan province, is the province’s first national high-tech industrial development zone approved by the State Council. In April 2012, the zone was identified as a pilot in the first group of national innovation-driven parks by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The zone consists of two parts, a 5-sq-km built-up area in downtown Kunming and an 86.88-sq-km high-tech industrial base in the Chenggong district. The zone was also honored by the Ministry of Science and Technology for its advanced management.

It claimed the 34th place among the country's national high-tech zones in a ranking made by the ministry.

In 2016, the zone’s economic development maintained stable with progress. It prioritized steady growth and development, while striving for business promotion, investment expansion and projects construction.

That year, the zone’s total revenue amounted to 180 billion yuan ($28.13 billion), and the public financial budget revenue was 2.11 billion yuan, an increase of 16.78 percent year-on-year. The fixed assets investment above designated size reached 14 billion yuan, an increase of 20 percent. The added value of industries above designated size grew by 11.2 percent, and the growth rate of the total retail sales of consumer goods was 12 percent.

It focuses on the development of three industrial clusters, including bio-medicine, IT and modern services and new materials and advanced equipment manufacturing.
